2024 Year in Review

Championing

for AANHPI Communities

Reflections on this past year

“TAAF remains steadfast in our mission of building safety, belonging, and prosperity for AANHPIs.”

Norman Chen
CEO, The Asian American Foundation

Dear Friends,

2024 has been a year of innovation, impact and growth for TAAF. We’ve been on the ground floor of supporting new initiatives, launched first-of-their kind studies, and invested in organizations and people making meaningful change. We’ve also taken time to listen and learn from deep conversations with community leaders, grantees, partners, and others to better serve our diverse Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community.

Our mission is to help our communities thrive, and to strive for safety, belonging and prosperity for all AANHPIs. We have the unique capability to advance these goals through a combination of investment, innovation, and a powerful national network:

We invest in nonprofits and AANHPI-led initiatives, connecting changemakers with the resources they need.
Invest
We create innovative solutions to meet the moment, tapping into our unparalleled network of leaders, decision makers, and visionaries to drive systemic change.
Innovate
We convene leaders across all sectors, cultures, and geographies to address the needs and aspirations of the diverse AANHPI population.
Convene

We’re proud of all we’ve learned and accomplished this year, and we look forward to continuing to work together in our efforts to ensure a brighter future for the AANHPI community.

In solidarity,

Norman Chen
CEO, The Asian American Foundation

Focus Areas

To solve the vast and complex needs of our community, we work across five areas.

When we fight hate, we make our communities safer. When we expand AAPI studies, we teach our youth empathy. And when we improve AANHPI representation on screen, we show how much our stories matter. Our focus areas are critical avenues to create sustainable change for the AANHPI community: lasting safety, belonging, and prosperity.

The AANHPI community is underrepresented and under-resourced. TAAF leads with critical initiatives to unlock resources and strengthen AANHPI leadership across industries.

Resources & Representation

TAAF prioritizes data and research as key levers of change, providing critical foundational research to inform public policy, community-based solutions and long-term systemic change.

Data & Research

AANHPI stories are American stories and they deserve to be told and celebrated. TAAF aims to improve AANHPI representation in mainstream media to combat harmful stereotypes and elevate empowering stories.

Narrative Change

To fill a critical gap in knowledge in K-12 schools, and create a sense of shared humanity, TAAF aims to accelerate and expand efforts to teach AANHPI studies as part of inclusive history in all 50 states.

Education

To truly root out hate and violence, TAAF is working to provide critical infrastructure, resources, and support to address anti-AAPI hate and violence across the country.

Our Work

To make meaningful progress towards safety, belonging and prosperity, we innovate with, invest in, and convene the AANHPI community.
Safety

In order for our communities to thrive, we must ensure their safety.

Since our founding in 2021, TAAF has prioritized building safety at both the local and national levels. We’ve researched the impacts of anti-Asian hate, and we've invested in organizations on the front lines of fighting hate every day. We’ve brought together partners from community, corporate, philanthropy, media, and government sectors to collaborate and strategize on making AANHPI communities safer.

National Network convening quote 1

"TAAF is doing such an amazing job uplifting other nonprofit groups and building awareness on a national scale. I do appreciate the connections that we made and the guidance from other groups, and lastly, sharing resources and experiences."

National Network convening quote 2

"Collaboration is key in breaking the cycle of hate against vulnerable populations. When communities exchange ideas, resources, and strategies, that's where the foundation  change or progress is built, and that is what exactly this event did from the first day to the second."

Belonging

Lifting up authentic AANHPI histories and stories, and creating spaces that reflect our lived experiences, to foster a true sense of belonging.

Representation in education, entertainment, media, and research matters—we dismantle stereotypes and create a shared humanity by producing and amplifying AANHPI stories and experiences.

Heritage Heroes quote

“Traditional form of therapy is very individual. But in an Asian culture, we work well in a collective manner. And when it comes to ballroom dance, you're coming in as a collective community. That's how we learn and build connection. That's the Asian form of healing.”

Nina Loc, Behavioral Health Director, Chinatown Service Center (LA), in “Joy (To Dance Again)”

Youth Mental Health Study & Events
Youth Mental Health quote
"Starting the conversation is what's going to end the stigma, and we need to start the conversation in saying that mental health affects everyone. Stress is something that's common, anxiety, depression, and all of these things are combatable. All of these things can be dealt with. It really does take a village to handle mental health. And when we start the conversation and we acknowledge that mental health is something that affects us all, the stigma is going to end."

Prosperity

We can build thriving AANHPI communities when we level the playing field and remedy historic underinvestment.

AANHPIs deserve the opportunity to achieve success, and to be represented at all levels of leadership—we do this by filling critical gaps in philanthropic giving, investing in talent pipelines, and inviting partners to join us in making an impact.

Raise for Good quote

“Raise for Good understands how overextended nonprofit staff are, creating helpful, non-onerous programs. Thank you for these workshops! TAAF shows it cares about our sustainability, not just financial investment. I’ve really appreciated all that you do for us. Thank you!”

"I am incredibly excited by the enthusiasm and momentum that was generated at the inaugural Asian Corporate Directors Conference. In partnership with Russell Reynolds Associates, TAAF is playing a critical role in building and convening a community of Asian American & Pacific Islander senior executives, compelling them into action on key initiatives and strengthening pipelines of Asian talent for the future."

“You see these faces that are leading their communities and leading their citizens and bringing them into better times and better places.
