Statement on 2024 Election Hate Speech
We are deeply concerned by the recent wave of discriminatory attacks and hate speech levied against Democratic presidential candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris, spouse of Republican vice-presidential candidate Usha Vance, and RNC speaker Harmeet Dhillon, both by social media users and-alarmingly-by elected officials, who should be held to a higher standard.
Similar unchecked political vitriol helped contribute to a 339% increase in anti Asian hate incidents reported to the FBI during the pandemic, and spikes in anti Asian sentiment have already been seen following Donald Trump's recent use of the term "China Virus" at the RNC. As our nation heads into an election already divided on so many critical topics, we urge leaders across all parties to join us in condemning the use of bigoted rhetoric and unite constituents in ensuring that the political process remains focused on the issues.
